Vade Mecum, NC has a very special place in my heart. Most folks here in Stokes County know it as either 4-H Camp Sertoma or Vade Mecum. Back in the late 1800′s early 1900′s it was a famous mineral springs resort. There were three in the county, Moores Springs, Piedmont Springs and Vade Mecum Springs. Unfortunately, all seemed to be short lived and plagued by fire. Some say the depression killed the businesses and others say the automobile.
I have collected many postcards from when the camp was an episcopal church camp, known as Camp Cheshire and/or Camp Vade Mecum. It was named after a Bishop Cheshire I am told by Thad Woodard, the Presiden of the NC Banker’s Association and generous patron of the camp today.
